The history of Sure Travel dates back to 1987 when the company was founded as a consortium of independent travel agent under the name SARTAC (South African Retail Travel Agent's Consortium). In 1990 the company underwent a change of name to Sure Travel and in 1995 a major repositioning as an actively managed and marketed franchise operation.
This strategy has been extremely successful and has seen Sure Travel grow to become the single biggest travel agency brand in Southern Africa with 176 agencies including 32 in-houses and around 20% market share. Sure Travel is SAA's single biggest customer and 1 in every 5 travellers in South Africa, corporate or leisure, is a Sure Travel customer. In 2001 the turnover of the Sure Travel group was in excess of R2.75 billion. Much of this growth in recent years has resulted from an increased penetration of the corporate market. Clients have increasingly chosen the superior service and personalised flair of working with motivated independent owner-managed travel agencies, whilst also enjoying the benefits of the centralised buying power and ground-breaking technology which flows from being part of the major travel agency brand in South Africa. Strong relationships with powerful preferred partners, an increasingly recognised brand and a commitment to providing superior levels of customer service are other factors, which have been instrumental in boosting Sure Travel's market share.
Sure Travel agents also have access to the most technologically advanced electronic network and Intranet system in the form of "Matchmaker". This provides a comprehensive information database and enables the instantaneous distribution of last minute special offers and promotions to over 1 000-travel consultants within the Sure Travel group. In addition, Sure Travel offers corporate clients an advanced e-procurement system that provides a comprehensive travel management solution.
The recent re-branding of Sure Travel agencies has given a consistently upmarket, distinctive and professional appearance for shop fronts that has been reinforced through the development of new stationary. All of these developments are increasingly making Sure Travel a household brand and strengthening our position as the preferred travel supplier in South Africa.
